Pool pH too high: how to bring it down lastingly

Above 7.6, the pH makes chlorine far less effective and encourages scale deposits. You correct it with pH minus, but a pH that keeps rising often reveals an alkalinity that is too high.

A high pH has two major consequences: chlorine loses most of its disinfecting power, and scale deposits (water clouding, walls scaling up). Why a high pH is a problem

At 7.8 or above, chlorine works at only a fraction of its effectiveness: the water can cloud or turn green despite a correct chlorine level. Meanwhile, dissolved scale precipitates, giving milky water and scaling the liner, pipes and chlorinator. The target stays 7.0 to 7.4.

The link with alkalinity

Total alkalinity buffers the pH. When it is very high (above about 150 mg/L), the pH becomes "locked" high and rises back after each correction. In that case, lower the pH in small steps, with filtration running, rather than with one large dose.

  1. Measure the pH and alkalinity

    Check both together. Very high alkalinity explains a pH that will not come down.

  2. Add pH minus gradually

    Dissolve the pH minus (sodium bisulfate) in a bucket of water, pour with filtration running, without overdosing.

  3. Let it circulate, then retest

    Wait a few hours of filtration before retesting. Correct again in small amounts if needed.

  4. Watch the scale
